Decline of construction industry continues

KERRY'S construction industry continues to suffer with the number of building starts falling again in the first six months of the year according to new figures published this week.

The latest edition of the National Housing Construction Index, compiled and issued by business analysts Link2Plans, shows that the number of building commencements notified to Kerry County Council dropped by thirty per cent between January and June this year.

According to the figures Kerry experienced the eighth highest drop in building commencements nationally.

Kerry planning commencements fell from 125 between January and June 2012 to just 88 in the same period in 2013.

This year's sharp drop follows a previous fall of 22 per cent between 2011 and 2012.

In addition to the sharp fall in commencements the number planning applications made in Kerry has also decreased this year falling by 15 per cent from 193 in January to June 2012, to 165 in the same period in 2013.

There is some mildly positive news contained in the figures. Last year the number of planning applications made in Kerry had fallen by 37 per cent. When compared with the 15 per cent drop seen this year this may indicate that the rate of decline in the construction sector may at least be beginning to slow.

Although planning applications were down by 10 per cent nationally, compared with 15 per cent in Kerry, four counties actually recorded a significant increase in applications with Dublin witnessing a rise of seven per cent.

Four counties, Roscommon, Wexford, Monaghan and Dublin also showed an increase in commencements of between nine and 41 per cent.

The number of commencements in Kerry is expected to keep falling based on the fact that planning applications in the county continue to fall.
