BALLYHEIGUE was the scene of great horse-racing excitement as the annual races got underway on New Year's Day.
The meeting was to have been held last Sunday but had to be deferred because of the stormy weather. However, on Tuesday the sun smiled on the event - at least for a while.
"Becaise a lot of other race meetings have had to be cancelled this year there was great interest and we had 88 individual entries which was very good," Race Committee organiser Liam O'Mahony said.
The racing kicked off at 12.30pm on the beach and continued until after 3pm with particular interest in the two-mile derby, the biggest race of the meeting for Ballyheigue.
