WHILE the full extent of the savings that will be made by scrapping Tralee, Listowel and Killarney town councils is not yet not known, it's expected the cuts could potentially create savings running into the millions.
Between them the three town councils had a combined operating budget last year of over €27.8 million. While a significant portion of these budgets will transfer to the enlarged Kerry County Council, the slimming down of local bureaucracy and an end to the duplication of several senior management positions and several departments will lead to substantial savings.
The most obvious and immediate savings will come from the cut to councillors themselves.
In 2011 the 30 councillors who sit on the three town councils cost a combined total of over €544,000 in pay, allowances, expenses and associated support costs.
