A RISING star of the Irish boxing world and his mentor were honoured by Kerry County Council on Monday with a special ceremony marking some fantastic achievements.
Cashen Vale Boxing Club star Brian Wall and coach Patrick O'Brien were honoured with a civic reception at Kerry County Council buildings on Monday where Mayor Terry O'Brien presented them with certificates celebrating their achievements.
The talented middleweight (16) most recently brought acclaim to north Kerry boxing when he won a silver medal for Ireland at the European Junior Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria in June. The threetime Irish champion beat a Romanian, a Turkish and a Hungarian boxer to get to the middleweight final. Unfortunately, Brian had to retire injured in the first round of the big showdown with Russian boxer Magomed Magomedov.
Coach Patrick O'Brien has trained eight boxers at the Club to Irish titles, meanwhile, and Cashen Vale President Mick Finucane and secretary Patrick Fitzmaurice were only too delighted to stand with the pair as they were honoured.
"Brian's a great prospect and the club are trying to nurture him along," Patrick Fitzmaurice said afterwards. "He is the first boxer from Kerry to win a silver medal at the European Championships and he's a very talented young man. It was wonderful to see Brian and Patrick being honored at today's Civic Reception. It's a great honor for the club and we're delighted with that."
