THERE are fears Listowel may be targeted with a batch of counterfeit € 50 notes during race week following a seizure of fake notes in Cork at the weekend.
Business people are urged to be vigilant when handling € 50 notes during the week. The notes seized in Cork are described by gardaí as being of ' high quality' and it is feared that knock-off notes from the same print run might make it to Listowel for the race week.
"We're asking all businesses to be particularly vigilant around taking € 50 notes after the seizure in Cork at the weekend," a spokesperson for the gardaí in Listowel said. "These notes are of a very high quality and could be easily missed during the busy period so it's vital that everyone is aware of the danger." Gardaí had not received any report of the notes in Listowel by Tuesday, however.
All the notes seized bear the same serial number - one of the few obvious ways to spot the deceit. The serial number is X65080515665, gardaí said.
Kelly Brown of the Independent Traders' Association of Listowel issued a warning to her fellow business people on Monday concerning the fears.
"I'm confident that most traders are aware of the danger now and the good thing about the business community here is that it is close and if any notes are found word will travel around town very quickly."
Ms Brown appealed to publicans to be extra vigilant in particular given the level of transactions within the trade throughout the week.
