Bumper year for airport as profits surge
Kerry airport has enjoyed a bumper year with after tax profits soaring at the airport.
In its annual report - published ahead of the airport's AGM on June 1 - the company reported after tax profits of €287,613 for 2016.
That represents a massive jump of over €256,000 on the previous year when after tax profits were just €30,980.
Passenger numbers passing through the airport were also up significantly with 325,670 passing through the airport - a year on year increase of six per cent.
Passenger numbers on the Kerry Dublin route grew by 10 per cent while both the Kerry London and Kerry Frankfurt routes saw nine per cent more passengers in 2016.
Kerry Airport Chairman Denis Cregan said 2016 had been a positive year for the airport.
"The year 2016 was once again, for second year in succession, one of positive growth in terms of an increase of six per cent in passenger numbers using the facility year-on-year as well as achieving greater efficiencies in overall profitability," said Mr Cregan.
"We continue to see new opportunities within the airline industry and a new twice-weekly service to Berlin starting in November 2017 is a welcome addition to our services to Germany," Mr Cregan said.
"It's vitally important that our existing passengers increase their support and frequency on the Kerry Dublin flight and that we actively promote the advantages of using the service to potential customers currently using other modes of travel to access the capital," said Mr Cregan.
Turnover at the airport increased from €5.8m to €6m an increase which management said reflected increased passenger related revenues for the year.
Management also reported that during 2016 over €581,000 was spent on areas of safety and security.
This included upgrades to security facilities and fire fighting equipment. This was carried out with the support of funding from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
The airport is now operating a 14 and a half hour day with staffing levels accounting for the equivalent of 47 full time staff.
Kerry Airport's AGM will be held at The Earl of Desmond Hotel in Tralee on Thursday, June 1.
