THE newly appointed Bishop of Limerick, Fr Brendán Leahy, has family roots in West Kerry. The Professor of Theology and qualified barrister – who was a priest in the Archdiocese of Dublin and is currently professor of systematic theology at St Patrick's College in Maynooth – was appointed to the position by Pope Benedict last week.
Bishop Leahy's parents are Maurice Leahy (a native of Cuas) and Mrs Treasa (nee Moriarty) Leahy (RIP), a native of Gorta Dubh, Baile an Fheirtearaigh. The family retain close links to the area.
