IT was billed as the biggest parade to ever hit Ballyheigue and Monday's parade certainly didn't disappoint.

A record number of participants took to the streets on a beautiful spring day to celebrate what organisers said was a showcase of community spirit.

Organiser Kathy Curran said the committee was blown away by the community spirit that was on show on the day and paid tribute to everyone who 'answered the call' to make the Ballyheigue parade the biggest and best the village has ever seen.

From the pipers of Booleenshere NS and the warning about preserving water from the students of Glenderry, to Simon Cowell and representations of local landmarks, judges were left with an incredibly hard job in choosing the winners in a host of different categories.

"It was without a doubt the biggest and best parade we've ever seen here. It was amazing," Kathy said.

"Everyone answered our call and I'd say a quarter of the village took part.

"As well as that, we've never seen such a crowd come out to cheer everybody on. It was just such a great spectacle and the effort people went to was huge."
