The late Elizabeth (Bessie) O'Shea
ELIZABETH (BESSIE) O'Shea (nee O'Brien) of Curraheen, Tralee and formerly of Ballymacelligott, whose death occurred on Saturday, November 3, marks the passing of a woman who had a caring place in heart for those less fortunate than herself and more especially those with special needs.
Aged 85, Elizabeth who was born in 1927 in Gortagullane Ballymacelligott, was better known to her family and friends as Bessie. Bessie married Cornelius O'Shea of Curraheen in April, 1951 and they resided in Curraheen in a house that always offered a céad míle fáilte to all who passed through its doors.
Although they raised a large family of 12 they always had room for anyone who needed a place to stay. Even when the house was full with more than 20 people, all were kept under control by Bessie.
She managed to provide beautiful homely meals and all will remember her tasty home-made mutton pies usually followed by a delicious home-made apple pie.
Following her husband Con's untimely death on her birthday on May 5, 1978, Bessie continued on. The resilience shown by her was legendary and the way Bessie handled the challenges put before her in life never ceased to amaze anyone who knew her.
Her generosity and kindness was extended to all and her kindness was only matched by her patience. She acted as a peace-keeper and adviser, always providing advice and guidance when needed but still maintaining fair play and a sense of humour.
She will always be remembered as an amazing friend, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother by all that knew her. Bessie passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 3 at her home in Tonevane surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Bessie's family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to all who helped in caring for their mother in her final years.
Large crowds of people came to pay their respects to Bessie and the O'Shea family at the removal of her remains from Hogan's Funeral Home on Monday, November 5, to St Brendan's Church, Curraheen. Requiem Mass was celebrated on Tuesday morning at 11am, followed by burial in Annagh Cemetery.
Bessie is sadly missed by children Mike, JJ, Eileen, Mary, Jerry, Con, Noreen, Pat, Gerard, William, Elizabeth and Joan, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-inlaw, brother-in-law, sisters-inlaw, nephews, nieces, relatives and numerous friends.
May she rest in peace.
