Mike O'Neill of The Point Bar and Restaurant in Renard has in his possession a golden piece of Kerry GAA history in the form of a 1903 All-Ireland senior football medal. This is a very significant item as it marks and honours Kerry's first All-Ireland senior football championship win.

The inscription on the back of themedal reads, '1903 All-Ireland championship won by Kerry. E.J. O'Neill'.

E.J. was Mike's grandfather, Ned O'Neill, who had the honour of playing on that Kerry team. O'Neill also won a London G.A.A football championship with a team called Rooneys in 1909.

Incidentally, Mike O'Neill, a former Kerry minor of 1976 has from childhood been an avid and passionate Leeds United soccer supporter. He recently appeared in a Leeds United match programme in company with a prominent Leeds administrator, Andrew Dick.

Meanwhile, John Waters, who is well known for his TV chat show appearances, radio interviews, newspaper columns and his one time association with singer Sinead O'Connor, was a recent visitor to the Point Bar and Restaurant.

John exchanged pleasantries and banter with the proprietor Mike O'Neill, as well as barman and waiter Donncha Lynch and patron Bernard Casey. He was intrigued to know that the young Portmagee Skellig Rangers footballer, Bernard, plies his trade locally as a comedian and encouraged him to pursue his talent further.

John Waters parted company to pay a first visit across the water to nearby Valentia Island where he was advised to visit such glorious attractions as Geokaun Mountain, the Valentia grotto and slate quarry and the pre-historic Tetra pod tracks etc.

In view of his recent well publicised jail appearance he joked that he was glad to see no parking meters in the vicinity of the Point Bar.
