GARDAI have warned homeowners across south Kerry to be extra vigilant, particularly during Mass times, as gangs of burglars continue to target isolated homes.

GARDAI have warned homeowners across south Kerry to be extra vigilant, particularly during Mass times, as gangs of burglars continue to target isolated homes.

There have been a spate of burglaries in recent weeks with the latest occurring last Saturday evening in the greater Kenmare area where three homes were targetted and cash and property stolen.

Approximately six homes were previously targetted in the Darwos area, while isolated properties are being hit as far south as Lauragh and westwards towards Waterville.

The incidents have prompted a number of local meetings with community alert groups during which gardaí have urged the public to be vigilant.

"This is the work of travelling criminals and we would urge people to contact gardaí if they witness any unusual movement of vehicles or individuals," Superintendent Flor Murphy said this week.

"When homes are being targetted it is a major concern and homeowners need to check their home security measures and not leave anything unsecured in outhouses and garages either.

"In some instances holiday homes have also been targetted and nothing has been taken, but in others property and cash has been stolen while the owners were at Mass," he added.

Sneem Community Alert Chairman Teddy McCarthy said the burglars were targetting money and jewellery and not items such as chainsaws or heavy equipment.

"These gangs could be calling at up to six or seven houses a day and they are careful about where they select," he said.

"Areas such as Kilgarvan, Lauragh, Tuosist, Castlecove and others are being badly hit at the moment and it is leaving elderly people very frightened, particularly when the phone lines are down like they were recently.

"Closing rural garda stations and reducing the number of gardaí and hours worked was always going to be an issue and we're seeing the results now," he added.
