The late Alexander (Alec) Groves
THE DEATH has occurred of Alexander (Alec) Groves of Cloghermore, Ballymacelligott, Tralee. Alec who died on Sunday, September 16, was in his one hundreth year and leaves this world having witnessed a multitude of changes during his lifetime.
Alec was the last in line for a number of reasons, but principally as he was the last of four brothers and one sister who all had pre-deceased him and his way of life is probably long gone from the Irish countryside. To say that Alec loved life, his work and his community would be an understatement for he was never heard to grumble or complain about any aspect of his life.
Alec was the middle son of a family of five born to Bill and Mary Jane Groves of Cloghermore, Ballymacelligott. His brothers were Willie-John, Con and Richard (Dick) and his sister Mary (Cissie) who lived in the UK and died a number of years ago.
He worked on the family farm and also for many neighbouring farmers and was well thought of for his workmanship and his dedication to the task. There are not many people who would say that they enjoyed a day at the bog, but in Alec's eyes it was a day of pleasure to work either for himself or for a neighbour in saving the turf for the coming winter season.
Alec enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, meeting friends of which he had many, telling stories and being told taller tales. He regarded a night's 'rambling' to friends and neighbours as an evening well spent.
He was a very proud member of the Church of Ireland community and was a regular at services up until his admittance to long term care. The care that Alec received in Kerry General Hospital was second to none and he is fondly remembered by all the staff and his friends while he was there.
Alec's remains reposed at McElligott's Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 18 with removal to Ballymacelligott Church of Ireland for Service of Thanksgiving at 2pm. Burial took place immediately afterwards in Ballyseedy cemetery.
Alec is sadly missed by his nephews William, Thomas, Peter, Paul, nieces Mary, Geraldine, niece-in-law Catherine and his many friends and neighbours.
Gone but not forgotten, may he rest in peace.
