SATURDAY, July 12, is shaping up to be a big day in West Kerry's calendar with the staging of the inaugural Brandon Bay Half Marathon & 10k.
According to Damien Finn, one of the organisers, it will be the only event of its kind in Ireland run entirely on a beach - and where better than Brandon Bay with endless miles of broad, golden sand.
"The course will be on the beach that surrounds Brandon Bay - from Fahamore to Fermoyle and back for the half marathon and from Fahamore to Stradbally and back for the 10k," Damien told The Kerryman.
"It will take place on Saturday July 12 which will coincide with Castlegregory Community Council's 2014 Summer Festival 2014 and it is being organised by Castlegregory Celtic FC and Castlegregory Community Council with proceeds going to local community projects and groups."
"We have received lots of interest so far and we haven't even advertised it! We are hoping to make it a real success to draw tourists and, if successful, we will do it annually," Damien added.
The inaugural Brandon Bay Half Marathon & 10k will have a strong community focus by all accounts and a talented student from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh has designed the event's official logo.
"We ran a logo design competition in Meán Scoil an Leith Triúigh and of the many excellent entries submitted, Aisling O'Connor's design was selected," said Damien.
"Aisling is a fifth year student and her logo was exactly what we were looking for as it captures what the Brandon Bay Half Marathon & 10k event is all about.
"Thanks also to Caroline Flynn for the graphic design on the logo."
The event is open to everyone but under-18s will require parental consent and the lower age limit has been set at 16.
Entry is €30 for the half marathon and €20 for the 10k.
People can pre-register at the event's official website, BrandonBayHalfMarathon.weebly.com and more information on the event is also available through social media on its official Facebook page and on Twitter at @BrandonBayRun.
