Kerry's live register jumped by 788 in November with 15,871 people signing on the county's seven social welfare offices. The largest increase was seen in Killarney where the local register increased by 425 to stand at 2,941.

The increase last month is broadly in line with trends seen for the last three years when sharp dips in the live register during the summer's peak tourism season are followed by similarly large increases in the winter months as seasonal tourism-based employment dries up.

The figures show there are now 2,271 people aged under 25 signing on in Kerry. Men outnumber women in the county's dole queues by a large margin with 9,766 men signing on in Kerry last month compared with 6,105 women.

Listowel was the only town to see its live register figure drop in November falling by 24 to 2,944. The Tralee Office, which also deals with claimants from the Castleisland area saw its register increase by 98 to stand at 6,414.

In Killorglin the register increased by 54 to 1,279. The Dingle register increased by 114 to reach 847. In Cahersiveen the register went up by 61 and is now 727 while in Kenmare and increase of 105 brought the local live register to 719.

The number of people signing on the register is not truly indicative of the actual levels of joblessness in the county. It provides a reasonable guide to the levels of joblessness in the county but also includes part-time and casual workers who are entitled to Jobseeker's Benefit or Allowance. However, it is generally believed the live register would be significantly larger were it not for the large numbers of Kerry people who have emigrated to seek work overseas.
