THE Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht has allocated €15,400 to Kerry County Council for maintenance work on the landing place on the Great Blasket.
The work is to be carried out around the landing slip on the Great Blasket which, at the best of times, is difficult to negotiate.
"The area above the slip is uneven and can prove quite slippery, depending on the weather," Mícheál de Mórdha, curator and director of OPW Ionad an Bhlascaoid told The Kerryman. "A handrail, a chain and removable and bollards are to be fixed on the slip and the area above both for health and safety reasons and to facilitate access to the island."
"The OPW announced recently that the conservation and preservation works on the ruined island buildings, which are in State possession, have been very successfully completed and the protective fencing has been removed; these works have been on-going for the past two years," he added.
The works are expected to make access to the island safer both for able-bodied individuals and those with mobility difficulties.
