€100k and counting for fundraiser John

IT'S official, Foilmore fundraiser John Garvey has broken the €100,000 barrier and he has no plans to give up anytime soon.
It's an impressive feat considering how the cash has been raised from just one event each year - the annual January 6 dance in The Ring of Kerry Hotel in Cahersiveen.
This year's dance welcomed back Valentia's Gerard O'Donoghue who last performed for the cause in 2012 and with tickets priced at just €5, the same price as when John first started out, most of the cash was raised during a raffle on the night.
John has been raising funds for Cork University Hospital for over a decade and he says he reached the significant landmark even before Monday night's dance.
"The figure had reached €100,000 thanks to advance ticket sales, so we want to thank everyone who has supported us through the years and we will keep going to help raise as much as we possibly can," he said.
Last March the local farmer presented a cheque for €9,505 to Cork University Hospital to upgrade ward facilities for cancer care, neurology and cystic fibrosis services at CUH and while this year's figure may not quite be as high, all funds raised will go towards vital causes.
The cash is in gratitude to the hospital for the treatment and care of two family members.
Last year's cheque brought the total raised to €96,970 and with John busy selling tickets throughout the county since November 1, he can reveal this week that he has just reached the magic €100,000 mark.
Indeed, a conversation with the Foilmore man rarely passes without an opportunity to sell tickets for the dance and many continue to contribute above and beyond, all for the worthy cause.
John's entire family is on the case and they have plenty of help from their friends, as well as from the O'Sullivan family, proprietors of The Ring of Kerry Hotel who have provided the venue free of charge each year.
