EXCITEMENT is building as The Kerryman and Tralee Musical Society's Tops of the Town 2013 draws to close with the grand final of the competition to take place in Tralee at the weekend.
Late last year The Kerryman and the award-winning musical society joined forces to relaunch and rejuvenate the much loved and much missed talent competition which attracted thousands of competitors from across Kerry in its 70s and 80's heyday.
The revival of the competition kicked off in earnest last month when three heats took place at Tralee's Meadowlands Hotel with hundreds of people packing into the popular Tralee hotel, which kindly donated it's conference hall free of charge, to watch teams from across the county fight it out for a place in this weekend grand final.
After three keenly fought heats four finalists - the winners of each heat and one wild card finalist team selected by the competition judges - will do battle in The Meadowlands on Saturday night.
The four finalists who'll be taking to the stage on the night are the highly talented and entertaining teams from Tralee's Teach Beag Bar, Killarney Musical Society, The Tim Landers School of Performing Arts and wild card finalists the Kerry Spotlights.
The Kerryman has been in touch with all the teams ahead of Saturday's final and the members of all four are deep in rehearsals as they tweak, refine and perfect their shows for the grand finale.
The final will see each of the four teams put on a half hour show incorporating song, dance, comedy and drama as well as performances by a number of special guests.
As well as crowing the overall winners Saturday's event, which hundreds are expected to attend, will see special prizes, such as awards for the best singer and the best comedy performers, being handed out among members of every team that took part in the competition.
The night promises some exceptional entertainment from many of Kerry's best amateur performers.
"It's been great to bring Tops back. It's been a great competition and were expecting a big crowd and some brilliant entertainment on Saturday night," said Tralee Musical Society Chairman Mike Lynch.
The final takes place at The Meadowlands Hotel, Oakpark Road, Tralee on Saturday April 20. Doors open at 7pm and all the action kicks off at 7.30pm. Tickets costing just €10 (€7 for students and under 18s) will be available on the door
