FOUR cheque presentations, totalling an incredible €24,000, were made to four cancer charities in Hanafin's Bar, Annascaul on Friday night, thanks to a sponsored walk from Dingle to Annascaul on Sunday September 16.
The cheques, for €6,000 each, were presented to representatives from Ward 2D at Cork University Hospital, Kerry Cancer Support, Children's Leukaemia and Friends of Leukaemia.
This inaugural walk last September, conceived by Jim McCarthy and devised by Annascaul Walks, was endorsed by a host of GAA stars past and present including Seán Walsh, Ger O'Keeffe, Ger Power, Seán Ó Luing, Dara Ó Cinnéide and Marc Ó Sé. Ger Power also made the journey to Annascaul last Friday night to attend the cheque presentations.
Hundreds of people took part in the walk and Noel Spillane of Annascaul Walks said he was delighted with the support the event received from the community. Plans are now afoot to make it an annual fixture.
"Annascaul Walks will set a date for the 2013 walk some time between the date of the Hurling AllIreland and the Football All-Ireland," he said. "This is a huge achievement for a small village and we are delighted to be able to support these charities in their work."
"The amount of money collected was way above our expectation and we are thankful to everyone who took part," he added.
The cheque presentations in Hanafin's Bar were attended by a large crowd who enjoyed a mighty night of craic and entertainment in the Annascaul Walks HQ.
