THE ongoing anti flouride campaign led by students at Mercy Mounthawk has received a further boost after the campaign won financial support from the Young Social Innovators programme.

YSI is a non profit organisation that runs and supports social and community projects in schools and youth organisations across Ireland.

Last week Mercy Mounthawk students Christine O'Sullivan, Elaine Heaslip and Eva Lee, who lead the school's anti fluoridation 'Don't go with the Flo' campaign, travelled to Cork where they presented details of their campaign to date before a panel of YSI judges in a Dragons Den-style pitching session.

Don't Go with the Flo is a continuation of a project launched in Mercy Mounthawk last year and focuses on fighting against mandatory water fluoridation in Ireland while promoting clean and safe water.

Students at Mercy Mounthawk have been campaigning against the presence of flouride in Ireland's drinking water since 2011 when that year's Transition Year class began the Little Miss Flouride Fighters campaign. That campaign has seen students from the school travel across Ireland to bring their message to numerous secondary and primary schools and even as far as the Dáil where they delivered and audiovisual presentation to TDs.

The Tralee trio were one of 20 teams from schools across Munster who took part in the pitching session and their project clearly impressed the judges who said it would be included in YSI's next funding package.

Christine, Elaine and Eva's successful pitch could also see them go on to represent Ireland. This year as well as picking projects to fund, YSI is also selecting a team to represent Ireland at the Sage Social Enterprise World Cup in Moscow next August.
