PARKING charges are to remain at special reduced rates at certain times and locations in town in a bid to help increase trade.
A blanket, weekday rate of €1 per hour for town council carparks in Listowel will remain unchanged under the new budget, with the council absorbing VAT charges for 2014. Meanwhile, an incentive to boost trade introduced in 2012 by way of two-hour free parking on Saturdays and a rate of 50 cent per hour for Charles Street and Courthouse Road will continue.
"This was introduced in 2012 for a trial period of 12 months, during which time we believe that it has had a positive impact in encouraging increased numbers of shoppers/visitors to the town and this has been acknowledged by the traders," Mr O'Sullivan said.
He said the council will also continue to support initiatives 'that attract tourists to our town', from Writers' Week and the Races to the Christmas Festival (through the lights and one-off free parking days).
