Believed to be the first person from Lispole - perhaps even from West Kerry - to graduate as a Naval Architect, Shane was joined by his proud parents, Tom and Noeline, his sister Laura and his brother Declan in Southampton as he received a B.Eng. (Hons) at the university's graduation ceremony at the prestigious Guildhall in the city centre. Shane, who chaperoned The Kerryman on a mackerel fishing trip with members of the rugby Munster squad during the summer, has been attending Southampton Solent University in the UK for the last three years. He has recently started work with Marine Design International Ltd which is based in Glasgow, Scotland and which specialises in the design of all sorts of commercial and fishing vessels, project management, tonnage and stability calculation

His achievements are a source of great pride for his family and indeed his native parish of Lispole and there is no doubt he has a bright future ahead of him. "We believe that Shane is the first naval architect ever to come from Lispole and possibly the first from West Kerry," Shane's dad, Tom Hand told The Kerryman. "We are all very proud of what he has achieved."
