Monster Rag Meeting

Published 09/08/2014 | 00:00

Cordal GAA Club looks all set to hold its 'Monster Greyhound Rag Meeting' on Sunday, August 24, on David O'Connor's farm in the Ballymacadam area of Castleisland. This has been the site of many entertaining and historic coursing meetings for the Castleisland club and has also hosted soccer games in more recent years.

"It has been nearly 50 years since a 'rag meeting' took place in Cordal, so this is sure to attract some excitement in the area. As we continue to drive forward in our field redevelopment programme this will be the major fundraising event for the club for 2014. And because of this we would greatly appreciate your support," said spokesperson and club photographer, Nora Fealey.

"Anyone wishing to be included in the official programme on the day and for all greyhound entries are advised to contact 087 2056150 for more information. Closing date for entries is Sunday, August 17th."

The stakes on the day will include: €500 - All Aged Open Bitch Stake; €1,000 All Aged Open Dog and Bitch Cup; €500 Local and Surrounding Parishes Stake; €300 Consolation Stake for all reserves and beaten 1st round finalist in the cup.

The grounds for the meeting will be suitably watered and prepared for the day. It is also expected that a family fun day will take place afterwards. However, more information will follow on that over the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, A 'Don't forget your shovel if you want to go to work' text has been reverberating around the parish as the hardworking Cordal GAA Club members volunteered to lend a hand to improve the redevelopment of their pitch and grounds on Tuesday evening.

As part of the programme of redevelopment, the club members are laying a footpath around the perimeter fence of the now, lush playing surface.

Another Cordal native, the late Patrick O'Keeffe and the reel 'Rolling on the Rye Grass' steps it out around the brain to compliment the vision of the growing grass on the pitch there.

This, the path and not the reel, will facilitate local walkers and joggers of all ages in the pursuit of their personal fitness requirements in a safe environment.

Anyone wishing to be included in the official programme on the day, and for all greyhound entries, are advised to contact 087 2056150 for more information. Closing date for entries is Sunday, August 17. The meeting will start at 10.30am and admission for adults is €10.
