NEKD Sliabh Luachra Walks Committee will launch the Glanageenty Walkways on this Sunday, September 9, 2pm meeting at the car park adjacent to the walks. The walkways will be officially opened by John Lenihan, former World Mountain Running Champion.
Located 8km outside Castleisland in Ballymacelligott, are the rugged yet wonderful 'Gleann na Ginnte' Loop Walkways . Glanageenty is steeped in history and folklore as the area was a great hiding place for a number of historical heroes and also some bandits.
The walks are a must for all nature lovers as the loops travel through magnificent wooded landscapes and along meandering river banks, where unique wildlife and birdlife can be witnessed.
The story of how the walk was won from the wilderness there is one of an epic struggle and a man's determination to drive a dream to its logical conclusion - as he saw it.
John Lenihan's dream is reaching its realisation at the end of a long and often gruelling campaign.
The Glanageenty Walkways will be celebrated with the opening on Sunday no doubt. However, the secret of its beauty and charm will be revealed to a nationwide audience early this winter when a ' Tracks & Trails' RTE television programme will be aired.
Tralee native and former reporter with The Kerryman, Paschal Sheehy fronted a crew which filmed extensively in the wood and in O Riada's Bar last week.
The programme is provisionally scheduled for screening some time in November and on that we'll keep you posted too.
