The death occurred last weekend of Paddy Batt Patrick Murphy, of Mein. His remains were removed from Dave Leahy's Funeral Home to St Mary's Church and burial was in the family plot in Knockane Cemetery. In his 99th year he had facilities up to the and passed away peacefully in Lystol Nursing Home Listowel where had spent the last few years. There he made great friendships with fellow residents including Brosna men Maurice Curtin and retired vet. Michael Flanagan. Paddy was a great conversationalist with a mine of information on subjects of past happenings not alone in the parish but elsewhere. A noted musician Paddy played in virtually all the local dancehalls including Connie's Loft, The Lower Hall, Headley's Bridge and Killconlea. In his youth he played football with the Knocknagoshel Juniors in the Castleisland District League. A day in his boyhood days he recalled many a time was that January day in 1923 when Denis O'Connor better known as Young Denny was shot dead in an encounter between Republicans and Free State Forces adjacent to his home. Injured in that encounter was Jerry Lyons. Both Jerry and his slane comrade Young Denny were taken into Paddy's old home where they were administered the last rites by a curate from Knocknagoshel before been taken to Abbeyfeale Barracks.
Jerry was then taken as prisoner and placed in Limerick Jail and Young Denny's remains were interred in Knockane Graveyard. A few years ago Paddy was accorded the honour of unveiling the Monument erected by John Houlihan of the National Graves on the roadside where the tragedy of 90years ago occurred. Paddy was the last of his family to pass away and we extend sincere sympathy to all his relatives and friends.
HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
By air and sea emigrants are daily arriving from foreign lands to spend Christmas with family members for Christmas.
All local coursing enthusiasts are really looking forward to the upcoming Abbeyfeale coursing meeting. It is to be hoped some greyhound from these parts will lift some stake. It certainly would be nice to win a trial stake and qualify for Clonmel in late February.
Locals are over the moon at the steady progress by J J Hanrahan of Currow on the International Rugby fields. JJ's mother hails from Knockbrack.
Congratulations to the staff of Leahy's Post Office and our two local postmen Gerard Hartnett and Jerry Brosnan who handled and delivered a very heavy mail in the run up to Christmas.
Christmas greetings to all readers of these notes at home and abroad and every good wish for 2014.
