ISK students win prestigious quiz

A TEAM of science whizz kids from Killorglin Intermediate School have emerged as the 2013 winners of the Kerry Science Teachers' Association's annual Junior Science quiz.
It proved a very successful day out for the Killorglin school which also took second prize in what was a fiercely contested event.
In all 13 schools from across Kerry took part in the quiz which was held last Thursday at the South Campus of the Institute of Technology in Tralee.
This prestigious Science event, which is sponsored by Kerry Group, continues to grow in popularity each year among secondary schools throughout the County.
This year the quiz proved to be a very competitive affair with 39 teams from 13 different schools competing for this year's prize.
Each team comprised of four Junior Cert students who answered eight challenging rounds of questions, covering topics from Biology, Physics and Chemistry as well as some general science questions.
The team from the Intermediate School were clear winners getting 63 out of a possible 65 questions correct. After two rounds of tie breaker questions, a second team from Killorglin Intermediate School achieved second place while the Presentation Secondary School, Tralee came in third place. A team representing Tralee's CBS The Green came in fourth place.
Each of the members of the winning team received a cheque for €30 and a certificate. Their school also receives the perpetual Kerry Group Trophy.
"The overall standard at the quiz was outstanding as there was a tense tie-breaker between four teams for second third and fourth places," said Stephanie Leonard of the Kerry Science Teachers' Association.
