DINGLE native and manager of Killarney's Brehon Hotel Gary Curran, who has enjoyed an amazing career in the hospitality industry, has decided to drop anchor in his home town as he returns to take over the running of his family's guesthouse (and celebrity haunt!) Greenmount House.
Gary's career has come full circle so to speak as it was in Dingle that he took his first steps on his career path, starting out in the catering industry at the tender age of 14 under the diligent eye of Pat Moore in the renowned Beginish Restaurant which was at one time 'the place to be' in Dingle, attracting the glitterati of Irish society, along with politicians, TV personalities and international movie stars.
"Pat was one of the greatest influences of my life and working there opened my mind to a career in the hotel Industry so I decided to pursue Hotel Management in Shannon College of Catering," Gary told The Kerryman.
During his time in Shannon, Gary was afforded the opportunity to go and work in the Sheraton Frankfurt Airport where he gained invaluable experience in their restaurant, conference and banqueting facilities, room service operations and accommodation.
"The Germans really know how to set high standards and I was able to bring this knowledge and experience with me," said Gary.
Upon returning to Ireland, Gary worked under Mrs. Gilhooley at the Nurenmore Hotel in Monaghan which was to be his first introduction to the wedding market, followed closely by a stint at Parknasilla (which was the Great Southern at the time) and then Eyre Square Great Southern in Galway.
In 2002 Gary moved to Los Angeles to work as restaurant manager at the prestigious eatery 'Shutters on the Beach'. "Managing a busy star filled restaurant was the easy part of the job, managing the availability of the service team who were constantly running off for castings was much more challenging!" he said.
Gary returned to Kerry in 2004 and took up the job of Operations Manager at the Killarney Park Hotel, going on to play a key role in assisting the hotel in obtaining its 5-star status. In 2006 he was headhunted by the Gleneagle Hotel Group to join the team at the Brehon where he dedicated his time to establishing the hotel as a prestigious wedding venue and in 2011 he was promoted to manager of the hotel.
Now, as he takes over the running of the family business at Greenmount% House - whose past clientele includes Hollywood mega-star Julia Roberts - there is no doubt that Killarney's loss is Dingle's gain!
