KERRY County Council is currently seeking quotes from suitable contractors to carry out flood prevention works on the Cullowa River in Rathmore and the local authority hopes to begin the project as early as next month.
A sum of €40,000 was granted in October for channelling works under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works & Coastal Protection Scheme following concerns from residents that their properties were directly under threat during periods of heavy rain.
The project includes the removal of trees, shrubbery and temporary obstructions on the fast flowing Cullowa River. The council recently held meetings with Inland Fisheries Ireland and the NPWS and it is currently identifying the landowners whose properties edge the Cullowa River.
Contractor quotes are being sought before the end of the November and works are expected to start either in December or January.
