LOCALS in Ballylongford are in for two bumper weekends as the north Kerry village not only prepares for its annual Oyster Festival from August 8-10 but will also host three days of a community fundraising this weekend.
Celebrity chef Mark Doe will visit the village this Friday night, August 1, for a cookery demonstration and tasting event in the parish hall at 9pm, tickets for which are available (€10) by calling 087 9176982.
The following day, the village will host a fundraising car boot sale in the church grounds from 9am to 1pm, while on Sunday night at 9pm the parish hall will be the venue for a lively céilí with Donie Nolan. Tickets for the concert are also priced at €10 and available from the above number, with proceeds of all three events being used towards a number of projects.
This weekend is the first of two action-packed weekends in Ballylongford ,with the annual Oyster Festival taking place the following weekend, August 8-10. Among the highlights of the festival will be a parade, oyster swallowing competition and 'nobbly knee' competition on Friday night; a walking treasure hunt, seafood banquet, children's shore fishing and indoor soccer at Gerry Connor's Bar on Saturday, followed by another exciting line up on Sunday that includes fishing for adults, a raft race, street entertainment for children and a free barbecue at Finucane's/Speedy's Bar in the afternoon.
