BALLYLONGFORD/TARBERT C.C.E. An evening of music and song was held in the Parish Hall, Ballylongford last Friday night to mark the LoveLive Music Day 2013 which was celebrated this year on 21st June.
A large attendance was treated to a most enjoyable evening of music and songs from our local branch musicians including solo acts, duets, trios and singers, all of whom were going forward to the County Fleadh competitions on Saturday. A great display of music was also on show from our under 12 group, under 15 group and our under 15 band. This was a free community based event and it gave everyone a wonderful chance to experience live traditional music, all from our local musicians which was of a wonderful quality. A truly enjoyable evening was had by all and it is hoped that we can take part in our National Music Day again next year.
Congratulations to all the musicians and singers from our branch who took part in the various competitions in Fleadh Cheoil Chiarrai on Saturday last. Our members enjoyed great success in the competitions with the following results: Fiddle U. 12 - 1st Caoimhe Scanlan, 2nd Conor Heaphy; Duet U.12 - 1st Aine Enright & Brion Cregan; Trio U. 12 - 1st Aine Enright, Brion Cregan & Conor Heaphy; Banjo U.12 - 3rd Brion Cregan (Recommended); Mandolin U.12 - 3rd Brion Cregan (Recommended); Banjo 12-15 - 2nd Timmy Flaherty; English Singing U.12 - 3rd Amy Kissane (Recommended). Rogha Ghleas (Tenor Guitar) 12-15 - 1st Timmy Flaherty; Uileann Pipes 12-15 - 1st Timmy Flaherty; Uileann Pipes Slow Air 12-15 - 1st Timmy Flaherty. All of the above now go forward to represent Kerry in the Munster Fleadh to be held in the University of Limerick on 20/21st July next and the local branch wish them the very best of luck.
A fun filled week and an informative week has been organised for all our visitors and locals. We hope this will be a week to be remembered and if possible, an annual event.
THE BIG NIGHT: The opening night is of course, the most important night, and will be held in the Parish Hall with John Flavin doing the honours of launching the week. Liam Purtill will be MC the event. These will include singers Saoirse O'Connor, Mike-Joe Holly, John Martin O'Sullivan and many more. Donal O'Connor will recall many stories of the Bally we knew and everyone, I hope, will add their own memories. Patrick Fitzmaurice of Well St. will regale us with some of Roger Mulvihill's songs and Daisy Kearney, storyteller supreme will have us laughing for the night. This is but a snippet of what will go on in the Parish Hall and we will proceed from there to Nookie's Bar where courtesy of Liam Nolan, we can enjoy excellent music and more craic. We are giving you only a peep of what we have ready for you. Actually, there is a soprano coming from USA!
