At the awards ceremony, which was hosted at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers on September 26, Alan was commended for his commitment to his trade with the judges describing him as, "a maitre'd in the making, his guests specifically ask for him as their waiter when reserving a table".
After spending nine years working in Annascaul's South Pole Inn, Alan went on to complete a Masters at the University of Limerick in International Tourism and Economics. Alan moved to Dubai in January 2011, two weeks after graduating from UL. Shortly after arriving he joined Jumeirah Restaurants, a division of Jumeirah International Hotels. He is nowthe head waiter at The Ivy Dubai, the sister restaurant of the world famous Ivy in London.
For Alan, the award is the icing on the cake. "I was nominated for the award by my manager and then the company put me forward as their representative," he told The
Kerryman. Tto win this award is amazing, I just wasn't expecting it at all!"
Asked why he thought he was chosen as waiter of the year, Alan said: "I'm just a normal person, so I don't know. Maybe just being me and being myself and being honest all the time and trying to be a good person. I really don't know. I'm still gobsmacked."
