Aislinn has her eye on the silverware in Portugal
IT'S been a busy year for 15 year old Aislinn O'Connell who has just completed her Junior Cert exams at Scoil Ide agus Iosef in Abbeyfeale and now she is in serious training with the Irish under-16 basketball team in advance of the European Championships in Portugal in August.
A lot of training has gone into this, having first got together back in October 2011, but Aislinn who plays with St Joesph's Basketball Club finds it "a good experience that takes a lot of commitment".
Playing sport at a representative level requires a lot of travelling and she trains with the national team once or twice a month in either Cork or Dublin.
Having won the under 19 All-Ireland Cup with the school this year, Aislinn has managed to stay injury free and believes she is in a good place for her summer training before heading off to Portugal.
"I can't wait for the championships," she said. "I must credit Clare Sheehy, who coached me with the school and the club, and is now Assistant Coach with the Irish team, for helping me along the way."
