100-mile round trip for fans

BEING well removed from the venues of Tralee and Killarney, the people of Valentia Island and the Iveragh Peninsula in general have been well used making the round trip of over 100 miles to support Kerry football teams who have come and gone.
The photo here depicts a group of hardy Valentia Islanders who braved the elements on a particularly cold day to support their beloved Kerry footballers as they competed against Derry in the recent National League game in Killarney.
The group includes Andrew Quigley who is involved with the underage footballers in Valentia and his son Andy, a current Kerry minor panellist. His younger son Adam in the photo is also an underage footballer. Joe Lynch is a former Young Islanders footballer and has given a substantial number of years to training, managing and selecting Valentia Young Islanders teams of all grades. Paddy Townes is an avid Kerry football supporter, travelling the length and breadth of Ireland in the Kerry supporters' bus as a team follower.
Owen Walsh is also a former Young Islanders player and has the distinction of being the full back on the Ballyfin College team of Laois defeated by Gormanston College in an All Ireland senior colleges final in the '70s.
