Conquering Kilimanjaro

Published 25/12/2013 | 05:36

The O' Donoghue sisters: Aine, to the left, and Maire to the right, who recently climbed Kilimanjaro in Africa.

The highest mountain in Valentia Island is Geokaun and no doubt the sisters Máire and Áine O'Donoghue of Ballymanach, Valentia would often have stood on its scenic summit, as it is owned by their uncle, Muiris O'Donoghue.

Recently, however, they scaled new and far more challenging heights when they reached the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing in the world at 19, 341ft.

Máire currently lives in Alice Springs, Australia and Áine lives in London.

Prior to their expedition, they met up in Nairobi and after the climb they headed for Zanzibar.

Congratulations to the two ladies, who are the daughters of Donal and Maureen O'Donoghue.

The Islandman wonders how many Kerry women have achieved such an accolade?
