MORE than three decades on from their all conquering run in the county championships Kerin's O'Rahily's 1978 Under 14s team gathered at the clubhouse on Strand Road at the weekend to mark the anniversary of their treble winning season.
On Friday evening the old Under 14 teammates met up in Charlies Bar to mark the 35th anniversary of their victory in the Kerry Division 1 Under 14 County Championship.
The majority of the team were on hand for the reunion and celebration which was organised to mark the achievements of one of the clubs most successful underage teams. That 1978 side enjoyed a hugely successful season which saw them crowned Tralee, West Kerry and Kerry champions.
Trained by Mike Keane, Dave Keane and Sean Walsh the 1978 Kerins O'Rahily's side won the county championship for the first time since 1957, ending a drought of 21 years, when they beat Austin Stacks by a margin of 2-3 to 0-2 in a final replay in front of a large crowd at Austin Stack Park in November 1978.
The teams success came just a year after Kerins O'Rahillys created a dedicated juvenile board with the aim of developing its underage players.
Among the players on that 30 strong championship winning panel were John Foley, Paudie Costelloe, Patrick Phelan, Danny O'Mahony, Tom Hoare, James Lynch, Jamie Redmond, Bernie Keane, Mike Griffin, Billy O'Connor, David Kirby, Pierce Hoare, John Cleary, Paul Maguire and Mike O'Driscoll.
