IT was as if Adele herself had entered the building!
Twelve-year-old Rachel Costello blew the ears off judges to win the solo singing county final of the Community Games with her amazing rendition of Adele's Someone Like You.
The Presentation Listowel sixth-class pupil - a daughter of Joby and Denise Costello in Ashfield - went all out, hitting each high note with perfection and stunning everyone gathered in Abbeydorney for the county finals last week.
Amazingly, Rachel also contributed to a second county gold for Listowel when she, along with friends Tara Behan, Jasmine Dalton and Shantelle Blackburn won the group singing competition as well. They sang Nancy Griffith's From a Distance and Katrina and the Waves's Walking on Sunshine. It's clear that when it comes to melody, the young lasses of Listowel have some of the fairest voices in the land.
"Rachel was over the moon," mom Denise told The Kerryman. "We're delighted for them all, they were excellent and Rachel is also thrilled about the solo win."
The brave girl was the first - gulp! - to take to the Abbeydorney stage on the day. However, she had planned to go all out and it paid off in droves. "She asked me what I thought of her attempting to hit all the high notes just before going on and I said 'go for it Rachel'," Denise explained. "She hit them all perfectly and we are absolutely thrilled for her!"
