Poetry award winners
THE winners of the prestigious 2014 Michael Hartnett Poetry Award have been announced ahead of the renowned Éigse Michael Hartnett Literary & Arts Festival taking place in Newcastle West this weekend.
Joint winners, poets Mark Roper and Jo Slade will formally accept the award and read from their winning collections at the official opening of the festival in the library at 8pm, this Thursday, April 10.
Founded 15 years ago to celebrate the life and work of Newcastle West's most famous son, the festival kicks off early on Thursday morning in schools throughout the county with visits from poets Eileen Sheehan and John W. Sexton and Limerick mountaineer Mark Quinn.
That night photographer John Minihan will deliver the keynote address, while the Shamrock Bar presents 'Body Talk' – a mixture of dance, storytelling and poetry – featuring Micheál Rowsome with music by Paul Dunworth.
Other events planned over the course of the three-day festival include creative dancing, storytelling, music and song by Sonny Egan, art exhibitions, poetry readings, lectures and Sonya Kelly's highly acclaimed one-woman show, The Wheelchair on my Face.
