THE Dingle Adventure Race, which is expected to attract in the region of 650 competitors to run, bike, kayak around Corca Dhuibhne on June 8, is getting something of an 'Operation Transformation' this year as Gregg Starr from the popular RTE TV show has signed up to take part.

The Tipperary man, who we saw lose some serious weight on the Operation Transformation TV series earlier this year, will take part in the new 'sport' section of the Dingle Adventure Race - a less challenging race option of the main route.

"Greg has been doing some training, cycling and running over the past two months and has been getting fitter since taking part in this year's series," said race organiser Noel O'Leary, who also confirmed that Kerry South TD Brendan Griffin from Keel has signed up to participate in the race again - his third time doing so in the four year history of the race. Irish Cycling legend Stephen Roche and Gavin Duffy of Dragon's Den fame have also lent their support to the event.

This year for the first time DAR SPORT has been added to the race; a less challenging course which will enable a broader spectrum of people to participate. "Competitors will run from the Marina before entering kayaks at Milltown for a 1km sea-kayak. They will then cycle around Slea Head and hike up to Mount Eagle before returning to their bikes and cycling back to Dingle with a short run to the finish line," Noel explained.

Around 450 competitors are expected to participate in the main race - part of the National Adventure Race Series, which invites competitors to cycle over the Connor Pass to Cloghane, hike over Mount Brandon and run from Baile Breac to Dingle before taking on a 2km kayak race.

"Some will complete this course in three hours, while others will pace themselves for six or seven hours," said Noel. "There is also an option for relay teams to complete the main course, with two or four team members."

Competitors for The Dingle Adventure Race can register online before June 3 at DingleAdventureRace.com. More information is available from Noel at 087-4190318.
