It's bound to make interesting listening in this sports mad county of ours and, indeed, well beyond.

I recently met up with Martin after hearing of his exciting new qualification in the growing area of sports psychology.

We spoke about his new sphere of expertise within the coaching world. There he embraces and tunes the mental attitudes of male and female athletes to all games of both team and individual sports.

"Quite a number of athletes seek help from Sports Psychology Consultants to gain an edge on performance. Athletes spend a huge amount of effort and time in preparing their body physically and nutritionally and are now seeking advice and assistance with putting time into training the mind like the body.

It just makes sense - as that's the one area of preparation an athlete really needs to get right," said Martin.

"Sports Psychology is basically the scientific study of the minds of athletes and their behaviours in sport. Through many techniques Sports Psychology can enhance performance in lots of ways. Various mental strategies such as visualization, self - talk and relaxation techniques can help athletes at all levels to overcome obstacles and achieve their true potential. It also deals with pressure from coaches and the athlete's own expectations," Martin continued.

"A vital area in sports psychology is working with athletes who may need help in tolerating pain and adhering to their physical therapy regimes. Adjusting to being side-lined for a sustained period of time is another niggling problem which could eat away at the confidence of an athlete.

Sports Psychology is extremely beneficial in helping athletes who want to exercise regularly but find themselves unable to fulfil their goals. Consultants in the area can help these individuals increase their motivation and tackle any related concerns they may have," said Mr. Horgan.

Sports Psychology is used within a wide arena of sport. Many organizations dealing with young athletes work with consultants to educate coaches and parents on how to help children and young adults to enjoy sports. They also steer mentors towards the promotion of a healthy self-esteem in all participants. Martin Horgan can be contacted at: 087 2606089 and on Twitter : @MH_SC
