IN a first for Writers' Week, the celebration will feature its very own fringe festival this year as part of a great initiative to give up and coming Kerry and west Limerick writers a chance to get their drama across to a wider audience.

The event takes place on the Monday and Tuesday prior to Writers' Week and will see two local dramatists, Mary Lavery Carrig and Paul Moriarty, showcasing new dramas for the first time ever.

"I came up with the idea to give local writers a chance to get their work across to more people," Abbeyfeale Drama Group stalwart Denis Hobson said. "It's a first-ever fringe for Listowel and it will serve two functions, firstly to help writers get their work out there and secondly to give drama groups in the region the opportunity to discover new and local plays," he added.

On Monday and Tuesday of the week, the plays will be given rehearsed readings with Denis's wife Merce directing the reading of Ardagh-based Paul Moriarty's play Connie Candles. That's at 8pm sharp on Monday, May 27, next in the Seanchaí.

Lixnaw actor Chris Fitzgerald will direct the reading of Tarbert native Mary Lavery Carrig's play Rathbally Daisies; described as a whimsical examination of love, feuding and faith. Rathbally Daisies takes place in the Seanchaí at 8pm on Tuesday, May 28. Entry is free and Denis invites everyone with an interest in local drama to attend.
