TRALEE historian Gerald O'Carroll has launched his latest book which offers new insights into the Earls of Desmond.
The launch of the book 'The Earls of Desmond: The Rise and Fall of a Munster Lordship' took place at O'Donnells Bar in Mounthawk recently and comes as Tralee commemorates the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the town by the Geraldine Earls in 1214.
A large crowd attended the launch which was hosted by Gerald O'Carroll's fellow historian and Presentation Tralee teacher Grainne Henry and saw Mr O'Carroll signing copies of his latest book for fans of his work.
The detailed and fascinating book, which costs €15 and is available in all good local bookshops, tells the story of the Fitzgerald Earls of Desmond who ruled Munster from 1207 until 1583 when they were overthrown, paving the way for the arrival of Blennerhassett, Brown, Spring, Denny, and Trenchard families who were to become the governing elite in Tralee for centuries after.
