WHILE Kerry folk across the county took to the streets in towns and villages on Monday to celebrate our national holiday, two south Kerry gardai were marking the occasion in a very different way.

Detective Garda Deirdre Murphy from Ballinskelligs and Detective Garda Brian O'Farrell from Caherdaniel were presented with Shamrock by the Irish Army in KFOR as they continued a year's tour of duty in Kosovo.

Both gardaí - who are stationed in Cork City and Garda HQ, Dublin, respectively - are currently serving overseas with the EULEX peace keeping mission.

Given the significance of the day to their friends and family back home, the pair were invited by the Irish Army in KFOR for a symbolic presentation of shamrock to mark the occasion.
