They have decided on the late, great John B. Keane's play 'Sive' by way of introducing themselves to the public.

The Sliabh Luachra Youth Theatre Group was set up for 15 to 20 year olds as a way of introducing them to drama and the workings of producing a play.

The initiative is the product of the creative and fertile minds of Moira O'Connor-Hughes and Nora Walsh who have been delighting audiences over the years as part of the Scart based Sliabh Luachra Drama Group.

Under the direction of Dr. Fiona Brennan the group has attended workshops and sessions to hone their considerable craft.

Renowned Abbey actor and director Conall Morrisson has been a regular visitor to Scart. The group has tackled and staged the work of some of the leading Irish and international playwrights over the past decade or so.

Now, as part of that great body of experience, Moira and Nora have teamed up to pass it on to an emerging generation.

"Nora and myself work with the group on a voluntary basis as part of the Sliabh Luachra Drama Group. We felt that the youth theatre group would give us the opportunity to help young people interested in drama reach their full potential," Moira said.

"Drama is a great way for improving social and personal skills as well as providing a safe environment in which young people can express themselves without fear. It has also been a great place for young people to meet new friends with the same interest. Some of the group had previous experiences in school productions while, for others it will be their first time on stage which is a fantastic achievement for them," Moira said.

"Seeing them grow in confidence over the past number of weeks and months has been wonderful and it is why we both wanted to get involved in youth drama in the first place.

"We have met every Saturday morning for two hours since September and we have been so fortunate to work with such a wonderful group of young people.

"They have been so motivated and eager to learn through the workshops every week," she added.

"We decided to perform Sive by John B. Keane as it is powerful play with wonderful characters and it is also on some schools junior/leaving cert curriculum," said Moira. We are so proud of the group already and performing next Saturday will just be the icing on the cake for us all!."

The group is made up of the following: Katie Flynn, Michelle Daly, Mairead Fleming, Owen McCarthy, Damian Delee, Mike Cremins, Paddy Flynn, Jack Walsh and Nick Fewtrell.
