IT'S all systems go in Abbeyfeale as the inaugural Gather By The Feale festival gets under way in earnest today (Wednesday)
Running until Sunday, the fun-filled family festival - based on the arrival of the Vikings to Ireland - is the successor to the hugely successful Gathering festival held in the town last year.
Festivities officially get underway on Wednesday with the Wobbly Circus in The Square at 6.30pm followed by the Novelty Viking Plunder through the streets, taking off from the church grounds at 7.30pm. At 8pm The Square will host a tug of war and sheaf tossing competitions, with the night's entertainment concluding with a rambling house at the Ploughman's Bar.
The highlights of Thursday's lineup will be the first round of Feale's Fittest Families at 7pm at Feale Fit HQ; a workshop on hair and make up for teens at 6.30pm in The Grove; a heritage walk from the adult education centre in Mountmahon at 8pm and a 'Bat Walk' in the town park at 9pm. The Winners Circle Pub will also host a Viking bachelor auction at 9pm.
Among the activities on Friday are a farmers' market which will operate in The Square until 3pm, an art workshop and face painting for children at St Ita's Hall from 11am to 1pm; round two of Feale's Fittest Families in tTe Square at 7pm and of course the highly anticipated 'Trade Wars' battle of local businesses in The Square at 8.30pm.
Saturday's line up includes a treasure hunt for children in the town park at 11am, the Noelie Roche Memorial Tag Rugby Tournament at The Grove at 2pm; Iive music on the gig rig from 7.30pm as well as a gospel and folk mass at 7pm in the Church of the Assumption.
Sunday will see the festival draw to a close, but not before another great day of activity, the highlight of which is the family fun day in The Grove from 2pm to 5pm featuring a mega slide, bungee run, kids tug-o-war, pony rides, food stalls, animal roadshow, berge motor track and novelty athletics.
A seven-a-side soccer tournament takes place at Riverside Park soccer grounds (Athea Road) at 5pm with the Battle of the DJs taking place in the Square at 8pm. To round off an action packed five days, Ruby's Niteclub will host a Festival Scattering Disco from 11pm.
A detailed programme of all events, times and locations is available at the Gather By The Feale Facebook Page.
