IN a brand new dimension to this year's Cartell.ie International Rally of the Lakes, organisers are kicking off the celebrations with a special family event on Friday evening at Killarney's New Street Car Park.
Beginning at 6.30pm, the family-orientated spectacle will feature a host of family entertainment and activities, including a performance by the Gleneagle concert band, Irish dancing, a DJ and face painting for the youngsters.
In addition to the musical entertainment, the night will also include exciting demonstrations from the Red Cross and the Civil Defence, while the rally's own rescue team will also be showcasing their vital skills when they rescue a secret celebrity from a racing car.
All the children present at the event will receive a customised Rally of the Lakes beanie cap, and will also get a chance to get up close and personal with the 150 plus cars and crews taking part in the rally as they pass over the official starting ramp at the New Street car park. Among them will be Craig Breen and local man Paul Nagle - who are currently running second in the Word Championship, and who will be in Killarney to compete.
"Given the significance of this year's Rally of the Lakes being included in the prestigious European Historics Rally Championships, we wanted to kick off the event with a truly exciting, family night to remember and let people know that Killarney is the place to be," COC Dermot Healy said. "This is the first time ever we have hosted such a spectacle on the Friday night and it promises to be a fantastic family event."
