The Irish Heart Foundation’s ‘Big Heart Fight Night’, supported by The Kerryman, takes place on November 15 at the INEC.

GETTING fit has always been a challenge but 'fighting' fit is another step-up again. But that's just what the Irish Heart Foundation is proposing and it's all part of a special fight night set for the INEC in November.

Of course, it's all a bit of fun but for the competitors it's sure be serious stuff as they get to grips with their opponents in front of the big audience expected for the 'Big Heart Fight Night' fundraising event.

Supported by The Kerryman, the event will allow would-be male and female boxers the opportunity to step into a boxing ring, all dependant on relevant fitness levels, all to raise money. The national heart and stroke charity is hosting the event and is seeking volunteers who will train for seven weeks with a professional boxing coach, culminating in a glitzy event in the INEC on Friday, November 15.

Each of the 30 participants will be asked to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship to cover training, equipment and the running of the night so that takings will go towards the Irish Heart Foundation's 'Listen to Your Heart, Not Your Head' and 'Act FAST Stroke' Campaigns here in Kerry.

The challenge is open to anyone between 18 and 39 and participants don't have to have any boxing or sporting experience.

"This promises to be one of the funniest events in Kerry in 2013 and we are looking for big-hearted people to take part," Irish Heart Foundation Regional Fundraising Manager Anne Riordan explains.

"The idea of stepping into a ring for most people is way beyond their comfort zone and this is what makes it such an exciting challenge," Anne adds.

The Irish Heart Foundation is asking local businesses to get involved by supporting a member of staff or other candidates through sponsorship packages.

"The more companies involved the more money we will raise over the seven weeks and this will allow us greater resources to drive our messages into the Kerry area - it will also allow for some friendly rivalry among the Kerry business community which is always welcome," Anne adds.

For more information contact Anne Riordan on 086 8520199 or email ariordan@irishheart.ie. Tickets are priced €20 and will be available shortly. Training will begin in mid September, visit 'Big Heart Fight Night Challenge' on Facebook or www.facebook.com/bigheartfight.
