ONE of north Kerry's finest beaches will become a magnificent racetrack on Saturday, January 4, for the annual Ballyheigue Races – a favourite in the national point-to-point calendar that's already drawing interest from as far away as Co Cavan and Donegal.
The coastal village is gearing up for another fantastic race meeting provided, of course, the weather plays its part.
"The only thing that will prevent us from hosting it is a storm," chairman Liam O'Mahony said. "It should be a fantastic day if the weather's good as the tides are perfect that Saturday. That's why it's on then as it was the first suitable day tide-wise."
Starting at 1pm, the card features seven races with a consolation race likely as well, and interest from around the country is enormous. "Agreement was reached between the horse and racing pony associations down here and in the north so there are a lot coming down, we've had phonecalls from lads in Cavan and Donegal," said Liam.
