SINGER songwriter Mickey McConnell's latest song, celebrating the joys of shopping in budget German supermarkets has gone viral with upwards of 28,000 YouTube hits.
The Listowel balladeer who wrote the famous Only Our Rivers Run Free is back with another stormer of a tune, albeit a less poignant one, in The Ballad of Lidl and Aldi.
But for social media and YouTube it might not have to come to as much attention as it is current attracting. Mickey was captured on video performing the wry tune in John B Keane's recently.
Once it was posted on Facebook and YouTube, the reaction was immediate.
It's an hilarious song all about Mickey's sudden conversion to the delights of shopping in Lidl and Aldi after his wife Maura sustained a leg injury and was incapacitated. Forced to fend for himself, he took to the German chains on his grocery travels only to return home with everything from powertools to 'wetsuits made in Japan'.
As recounted in the song, however, Mickey's credit card was subsequently binned by wifely order and his wanderings through the gilded aisles of Lidl and Aldi abruptly ended.
While the shopping fun might be over for Mickey, it's only just beginning for Lidl and Aldi as thousands more tune in to hear all about the diverse magic of the German shopping experience.
