DECEMBER will arrive a little early in Killarney thanks to a visit this week by Tipperary author Donal Ryan.
Donal will be in town for a signing of his new novel 'The Thing About December' this Saturday, November 23 at 3pm, and organisers The Killarney Bookshop are expecting a real buzz for the event.
"We are expecting a good crowd on the day. He is a very popular author at the moment and his new book has been selling really well here in the bookshop," manager Siobhan Randles said.
"He works full time as a civil servant in Shannon and is doing the signing here in his free time, so we are very grateful."
The book signing came about following a visit by Donal to The Killarney Bookshop this summer while he was on holidays in the town.
"Donal was such a nice man when he called in that we decided that we would contact him again and see if he might be willing to do a signing for us," Siobhan said.
The author's previous book 'The Spinning Heart' has just been long listed for the Dublin Impac Literary awards and was notably long listed for The Man Booker Prize in 2013. 'The Spinning Heart' also won Book of the Year and Newcomer of the Year at the Bord Gaís Energy Awards.
His latest work 'The Thing About December' tells the story of Johnsey Cunliffe, a naive only-child in his 20s, grieving following the death of his father, suffering from isolation and harassed by local bullies.
When his beloved family farm is rezoned and becomes valuable Johnsey becomes the unlikeliest of heroes as he takes on a local conglomerate.
