SIX AWAY ties in a row this season, in knockout competition - the Wexford Youths have qualified for the fourth round of the Leinster Youth Cup, following wins in Kilkenny, Carlow and Westmeath, and it took a late goal from captain and man of the match, Donal Shanley, to clinch it, a super header from an excellent Darryl Power cross.
It was tough going from the start against a big, tough side who played as if their lives depended on it. Tony Smith got a vital opening goal on the half hour but the Youths were pegged backed with 20 minutes to go when Ballinahown headed an equaliser.
With a now rampant home team and crowd, and a very heavy pitch, it was looking like extratime, but the Youths dug deep and Shanley did the business. These tough away games, along with those unforgettable battles against Bohs and Villa in Waterford, will help this group of players to grow, mentally and physically.
Away to Tramore in the third round of the AllIreland Youths is next up on January 20 - another mountain to climb.
