Taghmon duo triumph in Terenure Under-13 open
THE DUBLIN Juvenile open was held in Terenure on October 27 and 28. Players from Gorey, Taghmon and Monaseed travelled from Wexford to compete in the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories.
Taghmon duo James McKenzie and Robert Cogley dominated the Under-13 boys' events. In the singles James faced clubmate Robert in the final, and James, as he did at the Leinster 'B' tournament two weeks earlier, took the title.
Robert and James teamed up in the boys' doubles and reached the final where they faced local rivals Seán Dowling and Jack Nolan, from Gorey.
The Taghmon duo won the match, making James a double winner in the Under-13 event.
In the Under-11 category, Evan Byrne from Gorey continued his good form by winning the boys' singles, and the boys' doubles with partner Shane Flood.
In the final of the singles Evan faced clubmate Seán Bass who had made it through a tough semifinal against a player he lost to only two weeks earlier at the Leinster 'B' tournament. In the girls' doubles, Leonie Ward and Áine Crowe couldn't quite match their win from the Leinster 'B' tounrmanent, but did well to reach the final and take runners-up spot.
The New Ross Division 3 team in Group B of the Mixed League travelled to Taghmon on Thursday last. In the men's doubles, Taghmon's John Walsh and Noel Dunne defeated Pat Lynch and Joe Ryan in a smashing game 21-19, 21-18.
In the ladies' doubles, Taghmon sisters Ciara Dunne and Clodagh Dunne also claimed victory over Brideen Lynch and Emily Kent (2115, 21-15).
At this stage of play Taghmon were 4-0 up. New Ross were to rectify this in the following mixed doubles games though.
In the first, John Walsh and Ciara Dunne were defeated by Brideen Lynch and Joe Ryan (21-14, 21-8). In the second, Noel Dunne and Clodagh Dunne won the first set 2119 against Pat Lynch and Emily Kent. However, Lynch and Kent dug deep to win the next two sets 21-13, 21-15.
Terrerath were kept busy playing St. Martin's whose 'A' team travelled to Terrerath on Tuesday last.
In the mens doubles, Terrerath's Nicky Sinnott (captain) and Brendan O'Neill took on Nicky Sinnott and Aidan Furlong.
The first set was a thrilling affair and went down to the wire, with Sinnott and Furlong winning 24-22. In the second set Sinnott and Furlong won 21-16.
In the ladies' doubles, Emily Kent and Louise Bennett had an exciting first set against Fiona Hayes (captain) and Anne Kent which they won 21-19, and they also took the second set 21-11.
In the first mixed doubles, Nicky Sinnott and Emily Kent defeated Nicky Sinnott and Fiona Hayes 2112, 21-17.
In the second mixed doubles, Brendan O'Neill and Louise Bennett were defeated by Aidan Furlong and Anne Kent 21-19, 21-14. Terreath were declared the winners 62.
On Halloween night the same Terrerath team travelled to play St. Martin's 'B'. In the men's doubles, St. Martin's duo Robin Mackey and Peter O'Byrne had an exciting three-setter against Nicky Sinnott and Brendan O'Neill.
St. Martin's 'B' won the first set 21-15, but the Terrerath pairing upped their game to take the next two sets 21-15, 21-16.
In the ladies' doubles, St. Martin's pair Suzanne Morris and Angela Brennan were defeated by Emily Kent and Louise Bennett 21-17, 2119. This was an exciting, close game.
In the first mixed doubles, Robin Mackey and Suzanne Morris were defeated by Nicky Sinnott and Emily Kent 21-10, 21-16.
In the second mixed doubles, St. Martin's pair Peter O'Byrne and Angela Brennan battled hard against Brendan O'Neill and Louise Bennett. Byrne and Brennan were rewarded for their efforts, winning narrowly 21-19, 21-19. Terrerath were declared the winners
Terrerath will travel to Davidstown Community Centre on Thursday next, November 8, to take part in section two of the Division 6 mixed league games.
Davidstown's team of Marie Kinsella and Bridget Kelly join forces with Clonroche's Dan Rossiter and Joe Carton in what is hoped to be a lively game. Good luck to the
